Motormania BuZZ & the Glen!

Detour Ahead Hey All!  Here's the latest from YOUR club:

* Thanks to all of you who came out to help support the club at this weekend's Motor Mania 2010 at the Dome Center.  Our friends at the Street Machines of Rochester put on one heck of a show with unbelievable rides of all sorts from all over the northeast and Canada.  Over 8000 people made their way through the three day show.  ZCCR was well represented with cars from Mike Noonan (1971 240Z), Allan Robbins and Shawn Pritchard (1970s IMSA Championship BSR Sam Posey race car) and yours truly (1970 240Z).  The crowd was very appreciative of our Zs and lots of buzzzz was generated for our upcoming All Japanese Car Show.  A couple of pics attached and a complete picture gallery will be posted on the website this week, look for it.  A BIG THANK YOU GOES OUT TO Frank McGinley, Bob Anderson, Sam Hartley, Mike Krenzer, David Palermo, Scott Kozlowski, Mike Yendrzeski, Dan Casion, Shawn Pritchard and Mike Noonan for taking time to staff the ZCCR display over the weekend.

* Also this past weekend, ZCCR's Barry Brown ran his highly modified 1976 Datsun 620 truck to a new WORLD RECORD at the East Coast Timing Association's annual event in North Carolina.  My understanding is that Barry set the new record in the compact truck class with a 123mph run.  Not bad from a 2 liter 4 cylinder!  Congratulations to Barry for this record achievement.  Next stop for his team: the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in August for a run at setting another record.  Be sure to check out this record holding truck at our All Japanese Car Show in July!

* Some enthusiastic ZCCR members will be heading south to Carlise PA on May 21 to take in the Carlisle Import/Kit Car Show and the East Coast Z Nationals held within the Carlisle Event.  Several regional Z clubs are hosting the Z show and turnout is expected to be huge.  Let me know if you are interested in joining the caravan to the show.  We will be leaving on Friday 5/21, returning Sunday 5/23.  Once we get an idea of how many are going we will send out hotel information.  More details on the Carlisle event can be found at www.carlisleevents.com .

** NEXT UP:

Saturday, April 24 is Opening Day at Watkins Glen International Raceway!

Drive the historic road course and celebrate the opening of a new season.  Experience the twists and turns of Watkins Glen International, from behind the wheel of your own car! Spend a day of caravanning to the Glen, laps around the track, lunch and winery stops on the way home.   Among the changes to the track this year is removal of the gravel traps and grass, modification of the catch fence, installation of SAFER Barriers, and relocation of guard rails.   For $25 you'll drive three paced laps around the historic track.

Plan to leave Bushnell Basins Park and Ride 8:30am sharp. Exit 27 off  I490. If you get there early some of us will be at the Bagel Bin in Bushnell Basin. For those coming from other directions, plan to meet at the Track entrance by 10:30am. The track officials stated they would let our group of Z's all out at the same time on the track and stage us near the garage.  If you have questions or problems, contact Scott at cell number 585-690-0722.

We will be having lunch at Seneca Harbor Station, 1 North Franklin St. Watkins Glen, 607-535-6101. They have good food and a scenic view of Seneca Harbor. This is a restored train station originally built in 1876, with a custom made mahogany bar, sixteen foot ceilings and a spiral staircase to give guests a sense of grandeur that is reminiscent of the station’s heyday.

After  lunch you can stop by the Watkins Glen Racing Museum & National Motor Racing Hall of Fame at 110 North Franklin Street, or visit some wineries on way home.

Tentative Time Line
Leave Bushel Basins Park and Ride - 8:30am
Arrive at Watkins Glen Race Track - 10:30am
Lunch at Seneca Harbor Station - Commencing between 11:30 and 12:00pm

Please reply to Scott Kozlowski via email skoz@rochester.rr.com   if you plan to attend. He needs to give counts for lunch, track participation, etc.

That's it for now!  There's PLENTY more to come this year, this is just the tip of the iceberg.  Come on out an PLAY!

How's your aim ...

Detour Ahead
Many of us know the pleasure of lifting the hood on a long-nosed 240. Pull the release, index the latch and it glides freely, arcing upward until reaching a stately position where it stands tall over the engine compartment, declaring to all that wander past - pssst, come here lad, take a peek at the marvels below. If you've not owned an early Z then for sure you've seen one at a car show, or a cruise night, or maybe even in a buddy's garage. The Z is a masterpiece in simplicity while retaining its position as guy-art in the garage, and more than a few women have been enticed by its low, slender appearance, and clean unfettered lines as well - the Z takes residence and its owner melds with the car (there I've said it, it's a car after all) and a bond is formed.

This car invites all to sample life as a shade-tree mechanic. With little effort its guts are on display, its heart hums like the robust little machine that it is just perched on a pedestal before you, you see the pulley's spinning, feel its heat wafting high...grab the throttle linkage - there, right in front of you, pull it, push it, hear the engine surge and the ponies within call out ready to gallop down your favorite road at brisk and refreshing speeds!

Open its doors, what's inside, all the basics, nothing more complicated than perhaps a single choke handle...all we need to bring it to life is a simple routine shared by Dad & child for decades now. Settle in, buckle-up, grasp that sleek wheel, depress the clutch, pull that choke lever moving the cable within and get the carburetor alerted that fuel will be coursing through it promptly, a quick pump of the gas and then twist the key - your friend comes to life and the road calls out come dance with me!

But wait, it stumbles, coughs a bit, perhaps even stalls - no worries, armed with no more than a flat-tipped screwdriver you pop the hood, gaze over the carburetors, reach for the needle-valve limiting the fuel and make a subtle adjustment - bingo, that's got it, she's now purring like a kitten and ready to be buttoned-up and eased out of that fine building you call her home. The rest is magic as the ride begins and your day immediately gets better, trouble melt away, sunshine and blue skies welcome you ...

Well, let me interrupt this dream and take you to today's daily-driver, the beast that shares space with your beauty. You dare not lift its hood with any expectation that there's anything a mere mortal can do to tweak it, to dial it in, to become one with it. If it resists your command to go then what, it’s just another appliance in your life. Take a look here, give this story a wee bit of consideration, soon enough you'll come to understand how these days - we just aim our living room down the road!

Have fun thinking about the next driving season we are creeping towards, make plans to spend some time with your honey on our back roads, and please don't forget the screwdriver - use it while the opportunity still exists, and by all means - get yourself a 240 to speed through life in!

Here's hoping we meet up soon.

OK, so they're not Sports Cars - but they are Sporty!

Detour Ahead Heads-up on a four-laner
SpeedTV’s PINKS All Out will take the drag racing action four cars wide this weekend at the zMAX Dragway in Concord, North Carolina.

You read that right, the new zMax Dragway can safely race four cars at a rip on its twin drag strips, and drag racing reality show PINKS All Out will test the format in an episode that will be taped on Saturday, April 25, and aired on August 6. According to organizers, more than 520 racers have signed up to be part of the show. Each will receive two time-trial runs in hopes of being selected as one of 32 cars to participate in one of eight, four-wide elimination rounds. The remaining eight contestants will then compete in the customary side-by-side format to the race’s conclusion, where a best two-out-of-three hot lap final will determine the winner.

In PINKS All Out, racers vie for $10,000 in cash and a NAPA tool chest rather than for the pink slip of the losing car as is the custom on PINKS. In the show’s trademarked fashion, however, racers will forgo the tree and timing and lights as host Rich Christensen will flag all four lanes of racing with an arm drop, and a spotter at the end of the track will determine who crossed the stripe first. For some more information, you can click around on the drag strip’s Facebook page.

Latest NewZ

Detour Ahead * Sat. March 29: A morning cruise to the famous Maple Tree Inn in nearby Angelica NY to sample their world-famous homemade buckwheat pancakes and maple syrup.  A sweeeeet ride you won't want to miss!  Your Z may still be hibernating, but pile in to your daily driver and join us!  Watch your email for full details.

If you missed our monthly member meeting on Thursday (and you were hoping to have connected with Hagerty Insurance then don't despair! They couldn't connect with us that day, so we had a full house gathering watch a PowerPoint presentation by me-himself about my "Z-Cave" building experience. Had lotsa pictures & lotsa questions - it seemed to provoke a lot of commentary. Hagerty will join us later this Spring so you'll have another shot at making that connection.

Come on out Saturday, the pancakes are delicious & the Maple Syrup is outstanding! Any old ride will do for the day if your Z is still in hibernation like mine!
